The boil water notice that had been in place since Friday, September 2 was lifted today, Wednesday, September 13 according to An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny.  In a statement the Taoiseach said, "I am happy to learn the boil notice has been lifted on the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply and I expect every effort will be made to ensure this can be avoided in future.  I understand the boil notice was an inconvenience since it was introduced on September 2, but the protection of public health was the key reason for implementing the notice.  So far, no cases of illness have been reported from the presence of cryptosporidium in the Lough Mask Water Supply."

Schoolchildren in parts of south Mayo are making a 46 mile return trip to get to school each day, according to one local councillor. Ballinrobe based Fianna Fáil councillor Damien Ryan told the Mayo Advertiser this week: "In The Neale in one area, it was a mile trip to bring the children to school, it's now 11 miles. I know of other villages where they have to go out 23 or 24 miles to school and back.

An exciting and diverse programme of events for the newly launched Mayo Naturalists’ Field Club has been planned for 2014. At the launch, ecologist Cillian Roden gave a fascinating illustrated talk on the wonderful and diverse natural heritage of Mayo, which is unrivalled in any other county. During 2014, the club has planned outings to some of the most interesting natural habitats to be found in Mayo, including peatlands, sand dunes, lake shores, limestone pavement, and woodland. The first outing for 2014 will take place tomorrow Saturday, April 5, on the southwest shores of Lough Mask. Geologist Ronan Hennessy will introduce the story of how this internationally-recognised south Mayo landscape came into being at a location with wonderful panoramic views of mountainous terrain, limestone lakelands with volcanic lavas, boulder beds, and ice moulded rocks.

A local Red Cross volunteer crew launched an emergency rescue on Lough Corrib early on Monday morning after a local couple were stranded on the lake overnight when their boat got into difficulty.
